Welcome to the Safety Corner. Every day, more than 240 agricultural workers and farm employees suffer a serious lost-work-time injury. Five percent of these injuries result in permanent impairment, with the fatality rate for agricultural workers seven times higher than all workers in private industry. The statistics are alarming. It’s important we all do our part to make safety a priority on the farm.
PDMP and our partners at the Center for Dairy Excellence and Penn State Extension have teamed up to make safety a priority for all dairy owners and employees throughout Pennsylvania. Look for our “Safety Share” each month to remind producers and others in agriculture of how closely we have all come to tragic accidents on the farm. Share these with those you work with and encourage them to stop and think before they do something that could risk injury or, even worse, their life. PDMP starts every meetng with a 'safety share' and asks all dairy producers to do the same at their work site. Be a Smart Dairy Producer and Work Safe!
August: Take your time and use the buddy system!
Earlier this summer, dairy farmer Mark Mosemann was clearing a tree line with an employee, who was running a piece of large equipment. Their process was to push the trees over with the equipment and then cut off the stumps, claiming the wood. As they worked, Mark used a chainsaw to separate a log from the stump but was unable to see the tree had two main boughs. As he cut the first bough, the tree became unbalanced and rolled over on to Mark’s legs, pinning him. “It was painful,” said Mark. “But fortunately, the other guy had to shut off the equipment for something else and was able to help me.” Mark’s advice is to slow down, giving time to evaluate the situation, and work in pairs.
